Two mid-size Southern local news affiliates were analyzed phonetically to show that “Southern accent” features were still prevalent among the 20 broadcasters sampled here. In comparison to the Kentucky speakers, the Georgia broadcasters led in both the socially salient Southern feature of /aɪ/ monophthongization, and the more subtle “pin-pen” merger.The Coyote Papers are made available by the Arizona Linguistics Circle at the University of Arizona and the University of Arizona Libraries.
